New Movies On Demand: WarHunt, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, + More

May 2024 · 4 minute read

Okay, it’s the third week of January, and I’ve finished bingeing Cobra Kai, Archive 81, and Queer Eye, and now I have binge fatigue. I don’t know if that’s a real thing, but do you ever feel like you need a break from constant show consumption and want to cleanse your palate with a random movie instead? This is why I’m looking forward to this week’s new movies on VOD. First up, there’s the war-horror film (meaning that it is a horror film set during World War II, not a film about the horrors of war), WarHunt. The Mickey Rourke-led film about American soldiers who battle not only Nazis but a coven of witches is as wild as it sounds.

The latest film the Resident Evil franchise is also available for purchase on VOD this week. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is director Johannes Roberts’ attempt at a faithful adaptation of the game that fans adore, and features Kaya Scoledario as Claire Redfield, who has returned to her hometown of Raccoon City to investigate the mysterious goings on about town. Hint: it’s zombie attacks. But you knew that.

And then we have Arctic Void, a thriller about a tourist ship in the Arctic waters near Norway where all of the people on it (except for three filmmakers) disappear. After boarding the ship, the three men Ray, Alan, and Sean (played by Michael Weaver, Tim Griffin and Justin Huen) notice several bizarre occurrences of animals near the water going crazy and eating their young. Then, overnight, everyone on the ship disappears. The film is set up as a spooky supernatural mystery as the men try to determine what’s going on. Eventually they do, but it may not be what anyone expected.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is the seventh film in the RE franchise, and an attempt to reboot the series with a new cast and new zombie-killing adventures. The film, which had its theatrical release back in November, is now available for purchase on demand. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City has a cast that includes Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons, Neal McDonough as William Birkin, and Lily Gao as Ada Wong, and features some of the iconic locations featured in the games. While you can judge for yourself whether or not you feel like the film is faithful to the game, you can’t deny that it’s always fun to see the action and settings of the games brought to life.

What could be more scary than being an American soldier lost in the woods of Bavaria as you try to seek out and kill Nazi soldiers in 1945? Well, what if those woods also contained a terrifying coven of witches? WarHunt, from the title and the fact that it stars Mickey Rourke in an eye patch, could literally be about anything involving a battle at any time in history. But this is a tale of soldiers who must battle against demonic forces (i.e. witches in the woods who mutilate the bodies of the dead that they’ve killed) while under the watchful (single) eye of Rourke’s Major Johnson. The premise may seem campy, but the actors are committed to the plot and there are twists that make it a wild ride till the end.
