The company’s creative team used the pandemic pause to “plus up” the relatively new DCA attraction that debuted in a rush when Disney was looking for a quick way to vacuum up visitors expected to descend on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland in summer 2019.

The new Coco scene will be incorporated into the middle of the show and play alongside all of the existing musical numbers.

The musical number “Un Poco Loco” will anchor the scene with a new score produced by Germaine Franco -— one of the film’s original composers.

The Coco scene in “PhilharMagic” marks the first time Disney and Pixar animators have worked on a project where characters from both animation studios will be seen together on screen.

Mickey Mouse’s name may be on the marquee, but Donald Duck steals the show in “Mickey’s Philharmagic.” The story told in “Philharmagic” really belongs to Donald who plays an irascible stagehand who conducts a symphony orchestra on a journey through classic Disney animated musical sequences.

Concept art of the new Coco scene in “Mickey’s PhilharMagic” shows Donald Duck alongside Miguel Rivera, Hector Rivera and Pepita the Alebrije spirit guide.

The Coco additions mark the first time Disney has added characters to “Mickey’s PhilharMagic” since the show debuted at Florida’s Magic Kingdom in 2003, according to Theme Park Insider.

The attraction’s backstory finds Donald setting up the instruments for Mickey’s symphony when the hot-tempered duck stumbles upon a conductor’s baton and sorcerer’s hat. As you might expect, chaos ensues as Donald is plunged into a dream world filled with musical interludes from classic Disney animated films.

The current lineup of songs and scenes includes:

Donald spends most of his time trying to track down Mickey’s sorcerer hat and undo the mayhem he has caused, only making matters worse at every turn. Each of the animated scenes quickly introduces Donald and the associated characters for a snappy song snippet before sending the acerbic duck tumbling into his next adventure.

Visitors wearing 3D “opera glasses” smell apple pie, get sprayed by champagne and feel the splash from magic brooms throughout the special effects-laden movie. As you might expect, there’s no shortage of musical instruments, dishware and thingamabobs flung at the “Philharmagic” audience to emphasize the 3D effects.

The original version of “Mickey’s Philharmagic” opened in 2003 at Walt Disney World with a 150-foot wide wrap-around screen. The DCA version debuted in April 2019 with rows of screens on the sides of the Hollywood Land theater to stretch out the experience.

The new Coco scene will also be added to the “Mickey’s PhilharMagic” shows at Disneyland Paris on July 17 and the Magic Kingdom during the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary celebration that kicks off on Oct. 1. Disney has not announced if the Coco scene will be added to “PhilharMagic” shows at Tokyo Disneyland or Hong Kong Disneyland.
