Frank Bonner, who played Herb Tarlek on the CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, has died. TMZ first reported the news earlier today, stating that Bonner had died as “a result of complications from Lewy body dementia,” while surrounded by loved ones. His friend and former co-star Gary Sandy confirmed the news on Facebook. Bonner was 79.

“It Is True!” Sandy wrote on Facebook. “RIP My Great Friend!!!”

Bonner was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on February 28, 1942. He began his acting career in the experimental 1967 independent film The Equinox … A Journey into the Unknown, which was re-shot and re-edited as the cult classic Equinox. The actor got his big break as a lead role in WKRP in Cincinnati.

WKRP in Cincinnati aired from 1978 to 1982, starring Bonner as brash sales manager Herb, who was also known for his quintessential gaudy suits and white loafers. He acted in all four seasons, alongside fellow cast-members Sandy, Howard Hesseman, Gordon Jump, Loni Anderson, Tim Reid, Jan Smithers, and Richard Sanders.

Bonner also directed a few episodes of WKRP, and later returned to reprise his role in the ’90s revival, The New WKRP in Cincinnati. In between the two versions of the series, Bonner starred as Father Robert Hargis in the Growing Pains spinoff series Just the Ten of Us.

After WKRP, Bonner added the Saved by the Bell franchise to his resume, appearing in Saved by the Bell: The New Class as recurring character Mr. Harrington. He also directed a few episodes of the comedy.

Bonner went on to direct several of the decade’s biggest sitcoms, including Who’s the Boss?, Head of the Class, and Newhart starring comedy legend Bob Newhart. More recently, the actor’s stacked resume included films like Under the Hollywood Sign, Remembering Phil, and Shut Up and Kiss Me.
