A retired homicide detective’s body was found inside a freezer in her Southern California home’s garage, authorities said.

Miriam E. Travis, 87, who worked with the Los Angels County Sheriff’s Department, was found dead Sunday after a relative requested a welfare check at her home in Riverside, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

“Our hearts are broken by this news and the entire LASD family mourns her loss,” Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

The Riverside Police Department said officers responding to the home encountered a foul smell and hoarding-like conditions before discovering the body in a functioning freezer in the garage.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, but an autopsy has been scheduled.

Officer Javier Cabrera said Travis’ daughter had lived with her and gave inconsistent statements to authorities about her mother’s whereabouts, the newspaper reported.

No arrests have been made in connection to the death.

Travis retired as a detective sergeant with LASD in 1990 after 27 years with the department, including 11 with the homicide bureau.
